The deputy mayor for Urban Planning, Environment and Ecological Transition of the Huelva City Council, Manuel Gómez Márquez, announced today at a press conference the new pedestrianization projects that the Huelva City Council is going to implement and that will affect Plaza Houston on Isla Chica and Villamundaka street in the Huerto Paco area. Two works that the Consistory has already put out to public tender, within the framework of the new battery of urban initiatives that will be paid for thanks to the surplus generated in the last year by the municipal institution.
According to Gómez Márquez "from the City Council we are betting on new pedestrian zones both in the center and in the neighborhoods in order to build a friendlier, more enjoyable and sustainable Huelva, with open spaces for coexistence that favor the dynamism of our city in socioeconomic terms" . “A transformation aimed at the new model that marks the 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals and the future Huelva Urban Agenda, in which we are going to be a pilot city, and which we also contemplate in the review of our General Urban Planning Plan ”, he highlighted.
In relation to the last two projected actions, which join the one planned in the Plaza de Los Dolores in the process of being awarded, the deputy mayor for Urban Planning has explained that the work of the Plaza Houston, whose offers may be submitted until 16 December, they will be held on its side road and will have the same paving as the rest of the square, street furniture and trees.
This action, with a base bidding budget of 219,946 euros, will allow a significant expansion of the current square, which will gain 596 square meters, and, on the other hand, will revitalize the existing commercial façade, allowing greater pedestrian mobility.
In the mayor's opinion, through this work, which has an execution period of six months, we will create a unique platform with the incorporation of pavements, with the appropriate grade to guarantee accessible pedestrian traffic and the evacuation of rainwater, ensuring the connection with the square, favoring the hotel and commercial activities in the area with space for the installation of nightstands and the improvement of pedestrian accessibility. In addition to the arrangement of benches, litter bins and lights, in the action area and in continuity with the existing area, new green strips with trees are projected.
As for the work in Villamundaka, with a base bidding budget of 203,010 euros and an execution period of five months, a total pedestrianization of the street is expected, covering 767 square meters. The project also contemplates public lighting and trees with a new line in the battery parking area that is eliminated, as well as new plantations of tree species such as prunus, almond trees and ficus benjamina. “An action with which we will give vitality to this neighbourhood, generating a meeting space that will make the area more attractive and vigorous, favoring hotel and commercial activity”, he underlined.
The deputy mayor of Urbanism has influenced "the Government Team's firm commitment to this type of urban transformation actions, creating new pedestrian spaces" and, in this regard, has recalled those carried out in the surroundings of the Santuario de la Cinta, with the EDUSI, in the section of Avenida de Italia parallel to the side of Mercado del Carmen, on Calle Adriano del Molino de la Vega, the sides of the Town Hall and the surroundings of the 'León Ortega' School of Art in El Matadero.
Likewise, it has advanced that, through the municipal funds derived from the surplus and the financing requested from the NextGeneration recovery funds, other pedestrianizations are planned for the implementation of low-emission zones on the Palos-Fernando el Católico-Padre Marchena street axis. , Isaac Peral Street, Plaza de La Merced, lateral Plaza de Las Monjas and Méndez Núñez, Plaza de San Pedro, Daoiz and La Fuente and other works in the José Antonio neighborhood, Avenida Cristóbal Colón, and Calle Puebla de Guzmán.
