New garbage containers will soon arrive in the streets of Barcelona. They will not be any type of containers, but intelligent in which to throw garbage to identify. The local administration thus expects to obtain more data on the recycling habits of its citizens and, consequently, reduce the waste rate charged.
A new cleaning contract in the city of Barcelona will incorporate a series of technological novelties to the city's cleaning system.New smart containers but also a fleet of electric garbage trucks for example. If the plan is ratified this Friday, it will enter into force from this 2022 for the next eight years.A cost of around 300 million euros per year is estimated.
The idea with smart garbage containers is that to open them and deposit garbage, you have to identify. This will be done with a card, key or mobile by an app for example. With this, the cleaning system hopes to be able to better register the residual activity of the neighbors and in a way determine how much they recycle.
To?Tax fees. They indicate that with the collection of this activity and understanding of how neighbors consume and deposit waste, they can offer bonuses.Bonuses in the form of tax rate reduction.Of course, not so much at the individual level but rather at the neighborhood level.
As the future that seems to come, the truth is that other cities around the world already have similar systems where the garbage container is more than six walls to bring together garbage.Generally what these containers do is have sensors that allow the cleaning system to know when they have been filled.Sometimes they even have temperature sensors so that in case it raises more from the account they are going to empty it and do not start smelling bad.
A fleet of electric junk trucks
The other great change that arises with this new cleaning contract is to improve the fleet of junk trucks. The objective is that two thirds of the fleet (66%) be electric trucks. There are currently about 20% of electric trucks for garbage collection in Barcelona. With this they hope to reduce both pollution and sound pollution.
While the truck fleet will reach the entire city, the smart containers will do it for neighborhoods and little by little. The Sant Antoni neighborhood will be the first to have smart garbage containers and will be installed this year.
