Ryan Gosling will play Ken in the Barbie biopic directed by Greta Gerwig, with Margot Robbie as the doll

By now, the Barbie biopic has had almost as many possible versions as the American doll itself. A few years ago, Amy Schumer signed on to play the legendary Mattel creation, but later dropped out due to scheduling issues and it was rumored that Anne Hathaway would don Barbie's fuchsia plastic heels instead. Somewhat later, at the beginning of 2019, Margot Robbie revealed that she would finally play the most controversial toy in history, which put the feminist collective on alert, fearful that the casting would reinforce the impossible beauty canons of the original 1959 model.
"She comes with a lot of baggage behind her," Robbie said of the character in an interview with UK Vogue, which, to everyone's reassurance, will be written and directed by Greta Gerwig: "It stirs up a lot of nostalgic memories. But that means there will be a lot of exciting ways to approach it. People hear "Barbie" and think, "Okay, I know what the movie is about," but then they find out it's written and directed by Greta Gerwig and they're like, "Oh, well, maybe It's not that..." To this day, the only thing we know about the plot is that it was about a doll that lives in Barbieland and that after being "expelled for not being perfect enough, she embarks on an adventure in the world real".
More proof that the biopic will be different than expected, as reported by Deadline, is that Ryan Gosling would be chosen for the role of Ken, Barbie's partner. Mattel introduced Ken in 1961 and the doll, already with more than 60 years of history, has undergone dozens of editions since then. On Barbie's website, he presents himself as a "loyal, supportive and empathetic" Pisces who met Barbie "on the set of the first television commercial we recorded together, what a doll!" Fortunately, Gerwig will take some licenses when writing the script, which is expected to shoot in 2022.
