The stigma of female alopecia: "There is a sexy bald head, but not a sexy bald head"
"It's hard because we rarely see it in the movies or on television, but alopecia problems exist in our environment and we have to normalize them", encourages Roda. Fortunately, and as the psychologist recalls, more and more women choose to go out without scarves or wigs, something that contributes to making the condition visible. An example is the documentary Mujeres Calvas produced by Ángela Corredor and Sandra Román and which has been awarded the Mentorship award in the international film festival New Directors (FEST).
However, Roda emphasizes that the use of accessories such as wigs are a personal choice. “Women who lose hair due to a disease or another process do not have to show how strong they are,” she says. Botillo defends, for her part, the use of accessories such as scarves and headbands, although not “as a crutch without the which you can't go out into the street”, but as something that helps to accept the new image, instead of a mask to hide behind, or that it is just another simple accessory, such as a bag or a necklace.
