Why don't men know how to carry a bag?
MADRID, 17 Apr. (EDITIONS) -
On many occasions we can see how men help their women to carry the bag but on rare occasions we see them with it hanging in the feminine style, this has a curious logical explanation beyond a more understood style.
As explained to Infosalus Manel Domingo, Dean of the Association of Physiotherapists of Catalonia, the pattern of walking is learned from childhood and men do not know how to carry their bags on their shoulders because they have not developed this learning that is common among women.
"When women walk with the bag on their shoulders, they raise this part of the body to balance the body. From the cervical to the place where the bag is placed, there is a downward slope that, when raising the shoulder, women compensate, but in the In the case of men, the accessory seems to slip over and over again", comments the physiotherapist, a specialist in postural ergonomics.
But Domingo explains that this continuous muscle contraction in women can cause neck pain (cervicalgia) and in the trapezius when the bag is too loaded and you walk a lot.
"The bag should be crossed and not carry so many things, there are those who carry up to 5 kilograms in it. The width of the strap is important because it gets stuck if the weight is so high and its width is not enough" , says the physiotherapist, who also recommends keeping the bag as close to the body as possible and preventing it from swinging.

In addition, it is better to carry it over the shoulder and use models that allow this option and do not forget to change the side on which it is carried because we make the mistake of always carrying it in the same position on the body. "The same thing happens with children with backpacks, it is common to see them use one instead of the two straps they have," says Domingo.
WALLET SYNDROME
back pocket when sitting for long periods of time, whether at work or behind the wheel."Sciatic-type pain occurs whose origin is difficult to identify because at the time of consultation the wallet may not be in the person's pocket. These are pathologies that can be trivial due to their easy resolution but difficult to identify", comments the physiotherapist.
Using a wallet full of cards is among the most common bad postures along with putting your arm out the window, sitting in front of your chair, putting your computer screen to the side of your desk or sleep on your stomach and with your head tilted.
Women can not only feel pain in the cervical and trapezius area from the bag but also from choosing a bra size that is too small. "It is a very common problem that could be solved with bras that are more adapted to the body of each woman to her work and sports activity. The straps must be wide and reinforced at the bottom when it comes to running as a physical exercise or to mobilize loads in work," says Domingo.
The physiotherapist considers that aspects like this and unrecognized or untreated urinary incontinence are the two most prevalent and ignored issues that affect the quality of life of women in their day-to-day lives.
