You are not hallucinating: the mushrooms are the other great protagonists of fashion in 2022

In dresses, t -shirts and even bags. The trend is growing, and the redundancy is worth, as mushrooms. The science that studies fungi, known as mycology, is that unexpected reference that sneaks back into the trends of the catwalk this spring 2022.In fact, according to the Lyst portal, interest in articles containing the word "fungus" has grown 37% within the platform. Here we take the opportunity to break down the different translations that can be found in the collections of next season.
Through print (and silhouettes)
Spring is a good time to be inspired by nature and capture through the prints its different species of flora and fauna. In botanical terms, flowers are the most repeated reason, in any of its versions. However, this year has an honor guest: the mushrooms become a delicate 'Toile de Jouy' in the hands of Stella McCartney, who uses it for dresses and tops in different shades such as red and white or blue and blue the yellow. In organic cotton crochet tops, we find allusions to the wedding veil, a delicate fungus that also prints one of the shirts of its summer proposal.
In the case of Rodarte, the inspiration is familiar: his mother is an artist, and his father, a botanist specialized in fungi. Those precious dresses from the Mulleavy sisters who closed their spring parade were hand painted by their mother and also evoked their parent in their own way.
In 2022 we can find mentions in other collections: for example, on the cruise ship Marina Moscone opted for fungi reasons in a upholstery shelter with hair details and an American armed with drawings of embroidered fungus.Daniel del Core, former Gucci student, is an authentic obsess. In his pre-fall 2022 collection, more restricted as colors, he also refers by black hats: "The head like a mushroom, but with an apex of mystery," wrote the Italian firm a few days ago on Instagram accompanying this accessory.
Although mycological inspiration is not new (we already have in Alexander McQueen or in the Josep Font de Delpozo other good referents), the spring sewing 2021 was a season full of fungi on the catwalk.Merlin Sheldrake's Entangled Life book on how fungi hold life on the planet, inspired Iris Van Herpen for his collection at many levels, both in the silhouettes and in the pleated on his inner part.Creator Raoul Mishra took almost six months embroidered the exotic fungi of his haute couture dresses."They are a masterpiece of engineering on their own," reflected the designer to Vogue.com last year.

The echo alternative
The other way in which fungi appears in fashion in 2022 has more to do with sustainability than with prints. In his spring collection, Stella McCartney updated his Frayme model through mylo, an alternative to leather grown from Micelos. This first trade bag in this material is the result of its collaboration with Bolt Threads, a company that worked for the first time in 2017 in Microsilk Vegano. Como explican en su web, el primer producto que crearon a partir de materiales derivados de hongos fue un prototipo de su icónico Falabella, que debutó como parte de la muestra Fashioned from Nature del Victoria & Albert en 2018.Last year they launched the first garments, a bustier and sports air pants.Like animal leather, mylo is tanned so that it has a similar appearance, but unlike the false leather based on polyester, it is completely natural and biodegradable.
The British designer is not the only fashion firm that collaborates with this start-up.In 2020, several executives from Adidas, Keing, Lululemon and Stella McCartney herself would allied with Bolt Threads to work with Mylo, investing in their development and in the operations related to their production in exchange for hundreds of square meters of the material, according toThe New York Times at that time.In 2021, Hermès also implemented the use of this material with a similar collaboration in the field of accessories.Through Mycows, a company based in San Francisco, introduced a review of the Victoria model, in ‘Fine Mycellium’, a leather derived from the fungi that was baptized as ‘Sylvania’ by its creators. And this is just the beginning.
