'Hooters Girls' Did It: Company Reverses Mandatory Wear of New 'Uniform' That Looked Like Underwear
Although Hooters is known for its waitresses' shorts and tight shirts, the latest update to the waitresses' uniform sparked a heated debate on social media.
A dozen women who work for the restaurant started a TikTok campaign complaining that the new work suit looked like underwear.
The "Hooters girls" -or "Hooters girls" in their original language- claimed that the most recent uniform included ultra-short shorts that were more along the lines of a bikini or thong than actual shorts.
"I love my job, but I don't love wearing underwear to work" or "When the restaurant chain hires new girls they are assured that they will have 'their ass covered'. And then they give us this?", were some of the criticism from the company's own waitresses on social networks with videos that, combined, added several tens of millions of views on TikTok.
The workwear update caused such a stir on the internet that the company itself had to back down.
"As we continue to hear and update the image of the Hooters Girls, we are clarifying that they have the option to choose between traditional or new uniforms," a Hooters America representative said in an email to Business Insider.
It added that "(the 'Hooters girls') can determine which style of shorts best suit their body style and personal image."
Still, there are waitresses who say they will switch to the new uniform because they have been making more money since the update.
