The origin of the tie
The tie is a strip that has different styles of knots that are tied around the neck for aesthetic purposes. Its name comes from the Italian, corvatta or cravatta, which means Croatian. Its beginning dates from the year 1660, when the riders of the Croatian army used scarves tied around their necks. In turn, in ancient societies it was considered a risk to leave the neck uncovered. This is why wealthy Egyptians tied a triangular-shaped piece of cloth around their necks. Also, Roman soldiers wore something similar called a focale which was used by women and people with health problems, and also by speakers, to protect their vocal chords.
The closest thing to the tie that we know today was born in the second half of the 17th century, with the arrival in France of the Croatian mercenaries who used it with their distinctive suit knotted in the shape of a rose, leaving the extremities above the chest. Later, the French adopted it and spread it throughout the world. At the end of the 17th century, the tie began to be worn with a soft knot around the neck. Later in the French Revolution, the tie became a symbol of social status and gradually acquired political value. To distinguish the political sectors, the revolutionary wore it black and the counter-revolutionary white.
