Production notes: dark shadows
The director Tim Burton brings to the big screen the classic cult series "Dark Shadows" in a film with a great star cast headed by Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter.
In 1750, Joshua and Naomi Collins, along with his little son Barnabas, left England to begin a new life in the United States, where they built a fishing empire in the coastal town of Maine that now bears his name: Collinsport. After two decades, Barnabas has everything he can desire.Patron of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate conqueror ... until he falls in love with a beauty called Josette Dupres (Bella Heathcote), and in doing so, he breaks the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green), a witch in all theSenses of the Word, who condemns him to a destination worse than death: he makes him a vampire and then buried him ... alive.
Almost two centuries later, Barnabas is accidentally released from his grave and appears in the changed society of 1972, a stranger in an even strange time.Upon returning to Collinwood Manor, he finds that the splendid estate of yesteryear has fallen into ruin and that the remaining dysfunctional members of the Collins family have not had better luck;In addition, everyone keeps dark secrets.
Barnabas trusts his true identity only to the family's matriarch, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer). But her strange and anachronistic behavior immediately raises the suspicions of the family psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bohnam Carter), who cannot even imagine the type of problems that will reveal her inquiry.
While Barnabas intends to recover the ancient glory of the last name, he finds an obstacle on the road: the powerful resident and leader of Collinsport, Angie, whose countenance is surprisingly similar to that of an old acquaintance of Barnabas Collins.
The failed brother of Elizabeth, Roger Collins (Jonny Lee Miller) also live in Collinwood Manor; The rebel teenage daughter of her, Carolyn Stoddard (Chloë Grace Moretz) and David Collins (Gully McGrath), Roger's early son of only 10 years of age.The suffered caregiver of Collinwood is Willie Loomis (Jacke Earle Haley) and the new family employee, David's tutor, Victoria Winters (Bella Heathcote), whose countenance is mysteriously similar to that of the only love of Barnabas, Josette.

About production
A reluctant vampire with irresistible charm.A naive mysterious, inexorably attracted to him.A jealous, seductive and sorceress fatal woman.A strange family in a chilling house that keeps secrets in each corner.
These were some of the distinctive characteristics of a very popular series in the late 60s, the same one that broke the daytime television mold.In an era marked by a tremendous social and political agitation, "dark shadows" shocked the status quo of soap operas with its unique mixture of gothic mystery, romance and melodrama.Suddenly, young people ran out of school to be able to follow the future of the Collins family.Without the presence of DVDs, not even video gnawers to be able to record a lost episode, "dark shadows" became the definition. In an era Yadav Dvdrs, not even VCRS, to be able to record a lost episode, "r the cylinder by" television by appointment "for a generation of committed fans, for whom he is still a favorite of worship.
One of the was Tim Burton series, who when he grew up broke with enough paradigms as a filmmaker recognized for his particularly imaginative style. He tells us: “The program had a specific wave.It was a soap opera, but with a strange, supernatural subtext. ”
Johnny Depp, who stellarizes the film as Barnabas Collins, remembers, “there was nothing similar, definitely not during the day, with its vampires, ghosts and witches. That genre has always attracted me, until it was very small, so when I found ‘Dark Shadows’ I never abandoned it. ”
It may be Depp to speak literally.Decades later, he is not only playing the main role, but he is also producing the film along with Richard D. Zanuck, Graham King, Christi Dembrowski and David Kennedy."Dark Shadows" also marks his eighth collaboration with Tim Burton, a continuation of his extraordinary film association."Obviously the first person who came to mind to give life to this project was Tim," says Depp."He got excited when we started developing it."
“Johnny always undertakes one hundred percent with everything he does;He immediately knew that this passionate about it, ”says Burton."I was excited to know where I would get with the story, I knew that it was fun," I was passionate about "with everything that has been lost," R the cylinder was very fun. "
Producer Richard D. Zanuck, who has worked with the director for more than ten years, says: “Tim Burton is probably the main reason why I still make films today. He is an artist in the most faithful sense to the word, a wonderful technician with a spectacularly vivid imagination, capable of capturing her on the screen with the personal touch of him. ”
When wearing "dark shadows" to the big screen, Burton was excited to maintain the spirit of the program, and at the same time acknowledged that "it is difficult to capture. It is not something you can adapt exactly because there were more than 1200 episodes and had a difficult tone to capture, but it was always our inspiration. ”
However, producer Graham King emphasizes that you don't have to be a follower of the program - not even be the necessary age to remember - to enjoy the movie."We know that there are still many fans of 'dark shadows' - Tim and Johnny are - so we always seek to be respectful towards the series, but the film was obviously made for the contemporary public, so with the added layer of theTim magic direction, holds itself. He is widely criteria, he has quirky characters and does not take herself too seriously. He is comic and extremely extravagant. ”
Producer David Kennedy was a companion of the creator of the series, the newly deceased Dan Curtis, for years after the program ended and Curtis came to entrust Kennedy his most innovative creation.Kennedy reveals that the satirical vision of Burton's incarnation of "dark shadows" was always part of Curtis's vision.“When Tim and Johnny told me what they wanted to do with‘ Dark Shadows ’, his sense of fun took me immediately to know that I was in the right hands.I know that there will be inveterate fans of the series that will say that the original did not have so much humor, and it is true, but they always wanted to have it and I think he would be very happy with the final product. For me it is a dream come true. ”
Being part of "dark shadows" was also a dream come true for the star Michelle Pfeiffer, which described herself as "fanatic to death" of the series."She was obsessed," she says.“It was the first vampire program on television. As they had in the afternoons, my mother probably thought she was safe, that she could see it, but I felt that she was breaking the rules because she was quite chilling and sexy, especially for that time. ”
Helena Bonham Carter remembers, “During the filming, Michelle had the program on 24 hours a day and I could see that it was very original for his time.I still have a job to imagine Tim and Johnny scaring that, ”she laughs.
On the writing of the script, Seth Grahame-Smith, who also created the story with John August, says, “we wanted to be sure that there were moments of true scare, along with romance, lust and comedy. For me, the diverse is buried in an is both: killing Josette and D together with romance, mind for that tone was to weave those elements of humor and horror. ”
A large part of the humor is born from the unusual situation of Barnabas Collins, a womanizer of the 18th century that breaks the heart of a heartless witch called Angelique. When Barnabas declares that he loves another, the ethereal Josette, Angelique comes from both: killing Josette and giving eternal life to vampire shaped. However, it is not her great life, because she after giving it to him in a coffin forever ... or at least for the immediate future.
Almost two hundred years later, Barnabas is released from his grave by an unfortunate team of construction workers. The 1972 world is, obviously, very different from the one left behind."He brought us a series of ideas," says Depp.“The idea of a very elegant man from the 18th century, returning to 1972 - perhaps the worst era, aesthetically, in the history of humanity, where people accepted everything from small trolwash. We thought that a way to incorporate this vampire was to look at him that we did not have at that time, a look that can perceive how absurd those things were. ”
Burton, who was a teenager in the 1970s, agrees and adds: “He did not get so much to make fun of the time and see things from another perspective. If you think of the magical rings the pet ... I suppose you can find peculiar things at any time, but see those things in retrospect, while the eras happen, those things seem strangely than the others. ”
Being a stranger in a strange era, Barnabas returns to the only place he knows: the former glorious Collinwood Manor. He finds that the mansion is very deteriorated and that the few family members who endure are equally coming.Burton says: “Everything was reduced to try to capture the dynamics of this family, which is a bit out of the ordinary. That is, there is an internal dynamic that occurs in any family and that was something that interested me. ”
“His name was Barnabas Collins,
And he was the finest man who met this family. ”
The role of the vampire Barnabas Collins was created by Dan Curtis and originally successfully represented by Jonathan Frid. The character appeared almost a year after the series debuted and quickly caused the audience rates to rise and defined the program.
"Barnabas was an innovative character, a vampire protagonist," says Grahame-Smith."Maybe today that does not seem strange to us, but at the end of the 1960s that was incredibly unusual."
Interestingly, years before Burton's version of "dark shadows" came true, Johnny Depp had been chosen to become varnished by the creator of the series.Curtis, along with David Kennedy, had long sought to take the series to the big screen, and in the middle of the first decade of the 21st century, they approached Depp with the idea of a stellarized film by the actor in the role of Barnabas.
Depp, a fan of the series, says he felt "honest to know that Dan saw me in the role of Barnabas Collins," and also reveals that his performance pays tribute to the original paper actor.“Every angle I tried took me back to the iconic performance of Jonathan Frid.He did something surprising with that character, so my varnishes is, in large part, based on his, with one that other added ingredients and a little more flowery language ... a more vocal style in the enunciation. ”
For Burton, one of the benefits of working with Depp is the ability of the actor to extend its limits.“Johnny is willing to try anything. He always thinks new things and we both enjoy them.So every time we work together it is different and that keeps it novel and refreshing. ”
Zanuck observes, “Every collaboration between them two is quite amazing: Tim occurs incredible ideas and Johnny takes them to the screen. They know so well that just by seeing Tim's facial expression, Johnny knows if he liked something or not, or Tim says one or two things and Johnny immediately understands what Tim wants. ”
Makeup artist Joel Harlow was responsible for transforming Depp into Barnabas, working closely with the actor and Burton to form the distinctive face of the character. They made a number of makeup tests before finding the perfect paleness for the living dead, who despite being dead, is strangely attractive.Give it to her calcareous complexion required a layer after laying layer placed."When you saw him on the set or on the monitor he looked white," says Harlow."But there were a large number of colors in that mixture of makeup."To contrast with pale skin, Harlow Rodeo Depp's eyes with dark circles and his cheekbones hollowed out to give him a more cadaveric appearance.
The most distinctive feature of a vampire are his fangs, and Depp had enough options to work.Harlow narrates: “We had some who were curved and others that were straight, a short and a long pair.We even had a couple that seemed rather viper fangs, which came out of the teeth. We also had a set that was activated according to the way Depp opened his mouth; The fangs were put alone in the right position. ”
Another of the most notable features of varnishes were their sharp and pointed nails.Burton comments: “There was something about the fingers that was important to me, the way in which a vampire touches things.I think it also modified the emotional quality of the character's expression. ”
"Tim wanted Barnabas to be‘ tactile ’," Harlow prepares.“Somehow, his hands indicated the way, as if he were feeling things. That may seem easy to achieve, but in reality it is quite complicated because it had to seem natural, but when you add something to a finger, you are adding volume. They also had to be rigid enough so that they did not fold when he touched things, because that would break the illusion instantly. ”
“The hands helped a lot to create the character, I had to learn to touch things or pick them up knowing that up to six centimeters were physically my fingers. It took a little but I got used to it, and completed the appearance, ”says Depp.
Graham King says, “Johnny got fully into paper; You could see his commitment in the hours and hours he spent daily in makeup and hairstyle, and also in his performance.Barnabas does and says some quite crazy things, but Johnny's execution is serious, as if doing them were something completely natural. No one does that kind of characters better than him. ”
"The family is the only true wealth."
When Barnabas returns to Collinwood Manor, the only person who knows his true identity - and the fact that he is now a vampire - is the family matriarch, Elizabeth Collins Stoddard. She tells the family that she is a distant relative and explains her strange behavior attributing him to her coming from England.
"I think Barnabas finds a twin soul in Elizabeth," says Depp, "because she has tried to keep the name of the family and is as dedicated as he returns to her previous situation."
Michelle Pfeiffer, who plays Elizabeth, adds: “Keeping appearances is very important for her.She is very proud and protects the last name Collins and her family, even though they face difficult times. They are also very rare, but I don't think any of them is aware of how rare they are. ”
Pfeiffer reveals that when he heard that Tim Burton planned to make a version of his former favorite series, “I was very excited, I did something I never do: I talked to ask for a role in the movie. There was still no script and I said, ‘I don't know if there is something remotely adequate for me in this, but I want you to know that I am a fan of the program’.I knew I would regret it if I didn't, because I wanted to be part of the project. ”
Burton, who had already directed Pfeiffer 20 years ago in "Batman Returns," says: "I was very happy to have her for Elizabeth's role because she was really committed to the project and could be completely authentic within that unreal world, andIt was also perfect for the role of the matriarch because all younger actors admired her. ”
While Elizabeth desperately tries to keep the Collins family together, there is someone resolved to dissolve it: a witch called Angelique Bouchard, known in the twentieth century as Angie."A long time ago, Angelique felt rejected by Barnabas and she never overcame it," Burton explains."We have all had like that, in which it costs work to let things happen, but she takes it to one extreme, through centuries."
Eva Green plays the role of the woman who knows how to save resentment."With her everything is exaggerated - her pain, her desire, her revenge," says the actress.“She is a truly atrocious character, but I don't necessarily see her as evil. Her heart was broken and when you varnish, Angelique feels overwhelmed. She is at the cusp of her power and at the same time is very vulnerable because Barnabas is her weak point. She is convinced that he loves her as much as she, but that she does not admit it.She wants to be her owner, possess each part of him. ”
"Eva was the first person I thought for Angelique," Burton tells us.“I was very happy to have her in her role because she ended up bringing her much more than I imagined.I had very good ideas, it was fun to work with her and I was surprised every day. ”
"I've always been a fan of Tim," says Green.“He is creative but is also open to suggestions and that is wonderful for an actress. We had the same interpretation of Angelique's character. She never treated her as a one -dimensional villain; She understood her pain. "
Angelique is a woman who has changed with the times.During the 18th century, Angelique was a young dark hair servant. As Angie, the president of Angel Bay, she is a successful blonde."Tim wanted her to symbolize the American dream," says Green.“She is perfect in everything. She too perfect.Perfect makeup, red lips, platinum hair.Glamorous and at the same time sophisticated, but little by little, from the moment Barnabas escapes from her tomb, her appearance begins to crumble. ”
To worsen things, for Angelique it almost seems that she has lost varnish at the hands of the same woman ... twice. The new Nanny of the Collins family, Victoria Winters, looks surprisingly similar to Josette Dupres, the beloved of Barnabas, the woman who earned her heart two centuries before but who paid for that with her life. ”
"As soon as Barnabas sees Victoria, the old love revives," says Grahame-Smith.“Vicky, on her side, she can't explain why she feels strangely attracted to him.She feels comfortable with varnishes almost immediately. ”
When Victoria arrives in Collinsport, we feel she flees from her past."She definitely carries something she tries to hide," says Bella Heathcote, who plays the roles of Josette and Victoria.“She protects herself and she is not so willing to give her heart as we see that she is Josette. She is much more closed in all aspects of her life, and soon we see that she has reasons to be. ”
Burton points out, “it is obvious that Victoria maintains his own secrets and Bella has a certain quality that makes her look good in that role. There is a mystery in it, something that you cannot put in words, but immediately I saw Bella as a victory. ”
There is another inhabitant of Collinwood that is attracted to varnishes, although it is true that his attraction is given for professional reasons.Helena Bonham Carter plays the role of Dr. Julia Hoffman, a psychiatrist hired to treat the youngest member of the Collins family, David, after the early death of her mother. In theory, she would live with them a month but that was three years before.Dr. Hoffman lives permanently in the mansion where she has an unlimited endowment of spirits, specifically in her liquid form.
Bonham Carter comments: “She has reached the point where she has stopped being well seen, and then a curious character arrives at the house, Barnabas, the alleged relative.Dr. Hoffman is proud to be able to read people well. She instantly suspects, rightly, that she is not she who claims to be. "
"Helena is a little younger than the original character," Burton points out, "but he has an air that I found strangely similar.I don't know how flattered she felt when she offered him the role of an alcoholic and aging psychiatrist, but someone had to do it, right? ”She laughs.
"I thought I could offer me the role of the sexy witch, until I saw me as Dr. Hoffman, which was ... huh ... interesting," he jokes.“But she is a great role, and her Aspecto is hilarious, with bright orange hair and those ridiculous eyelashes. The truth is that she loved the character, so how to have not said yes. ”
Dr. Hoffman is not the only person in the Collins family with a weakness for alcohol.Jackie Earle Haley was given the role of Collinwood caregiver, Willie Loomis, who has the impossible work to try to keep the mansion that ages ... so, he doesn't.
"I've always wanted to work with Jackie," says Burton, "and this was the perfect opportunity. It is very fun and simply felt as part of the universe of ‘dark shadows’ ”.
When describing his character, Haley says, “Willie is a bit cascarrabias; This point in his life no longer cares. Some strange way, I think Willie enjoys the dysfunctionality that defines the Collins family; They fight for everything. They live in a beautiful but demolished mansion and pretend to be rich noble. And while giving him a bed, food and a safe place to drink, Willie is more than happy pretending to be her servant; He is perfectly fine. But Barnabas appears and gives Willie a new purpose. It is a phenomenal dynamic. ”
Someone in the Collins family who does not want to have anything to do with his lost relative is Elizabeth's quinceañera daughter, Carolyn Stoddard, played by Chloë Grace Moretz.Carolyn's first impression on Barnabas is that it is, in a word, "strange", and when she looks for her to ask for advice on how to court a woman in the modern world - victory - the conversation only serves to reaffirm the initial initial judgmenther.
Moretz says, “My character is a teenager of the 1970s who is very eccentric. She wants to be different from the rest of the family. As soon as she turns 16, she plans to go to New York to be herself. ”
"Chloë put perfectly into the idea of the problematic teenager, I don't think she is, but she did very, very well," Burton declares."She contacted the internal anger and with the feeling that you are alone and isolated, that strange transitory stage in which you are going from being a child to being something different."
Carolyn's minor cousin, David, does not share his opinion about Barnabas.Without knowing why, the ten -year -old feels very close to his English relative, perhaps because you varnish is the only one who does not judge him when he says he can speak with the spirit of his deceased mother.
Gully McGrath, who embodies David's role, says: “He has always felt just because everyone treats him as if he were crazy. They do not believe that he has a psychic connection with his mother's ghost and that she is protecting him despite being dead. ”
"Gully looks like a child who could see ghosts," says Burton.“He has that kind of behavior. That is not something you can ask an actor; It is something they have to have in his being. ”
David does not help his father, Roger Collins, is a complete narcissistic who seems to be little interested in his son."He is a rather empty human," admits Jonny Lee Miller, who plays the role of Roger.“I think he was once a good father, but after his death he was never the same.In a nutshell, he is not a good guy. ”
"Roger is the black sheep of the family," Burton adds."His past has a touch of tragedy," he lost his wife and now his son sees ghosts - but he is a scoundrel anyway. He has that seventies disk wave.He is the only guy who works well in that era: women, fashions, wide flaps, ”he smiles."Jonny connected perfectly with that attitude."
Without having time to rehearse before starting filming, Burton found a way to put his entire main cast in the mentality of their respective roles. He gathered them for a photo shoot in which they replied a famous image of the original series, all in front of Collinwood Manor's lobby.
Burton recalls: “The day before filming we made everyone put their wardrobe and recreate that photo. It was incredible. In 30 seconds they had all found his character and that was wonderful. It was a good way to make everyone enter the same wave. ”
Revele, little singer!
The cast of "dark shadows" also includes special appearances of some known stars. In a key scene appears Christopher Lee, who has worked on four Tim Burton movies. In this tape he plays the local fisherman Silas Clarney, who bites the hook of the hypnotic powers of Barnabas.Depp says: “Christopher Lee is not only one of my great heroes of acting; He is also someone I consider my friend and mentor, so it was wonderful for him to play this role. ”
When Barnabas persuasion powers begin to recover family fortune, Barnabas decides to celebrate with great dance;Rather, in the way of those times, a "Happening."Collinwood's great lobby becomes a vibrant disco, with a ball of mirrors, strobe lights and caged dancers.
The entire population of Collinsport goes to the party, including four guests who return to the Collinwood mansion after a long absence: Jonathan Frid, Lara Parker, Kathryn Leigh Scott and David Selby, all favorite members of the series cast."It was very exciting to have them there," Burton says.“Everyone wanted to take pictures with them. The fact that they came to bless the set, so to speak, it seemed appropriate. ”
Happening also has a live performance of the legend of rock Alice Cooper, who turns out not to be the “Alice” class that Barnabas expects.
Burton says: “Alice Cooper belongs to that time and was perfectly with the tone of the film. The terrifying thing is that she today looks like as she did at the time.In fact, we had a copy of a Rolling Stone magazine of those times when he appears on the cover and I think he even looks better now. It's very, very strange, ”he says.
Cooper was pleased to return to the 1970s and have the opportunity to work with Burton and Depp."I've always been a Tim admirer," he says.“He and I are like the same atmosphere; We like the same horror movies and I have always been an admirer of Johnny, the man of the thousand faces.I don't know anyone else who can do that as well as him. ”
In Happening, Cooper interprets his successes "Ballad of Dwight Fry" and "No More Mr. Nice Guy".Burton also included other classic songs of the decade in the soundtrack of "Dark Shadows", for example, "Nights in White Satin" by Moody Blues, "Season of the Witch," by Donovan, "Superfly" by Curtis Mayfield, "Crocodile Rock ”by Elton John and“ Top of the World ”of the Carpents.
"It's a wonderful collection of music," says Zanuck.“Danny Elfman composed incredible music and the original songs are equally important. They help establish the historical period and express the feeling that Tim wanted to convey. ”
Danny Elfman adds: “I knew that the greatest, most dramatic scenes would be musicalized with a more theatrical style, but the true delight was to investigate the variety of retro music that Tim imagined. He wanted a sound that evoked the original television series, in addition to other horror films of the 1970s.To achieve this, we maintained a minimum, ghostly, atmospheric style, only electronic music with a few instruments carrying the melody in alone. ”
“Bienvenidos a Collinwood.
Tienes que imaginarnos en tiempos mejores”.
The sets and costumes of "dark shadows" move between two different centuries; Most of this is achieved with visual effects.Burton comments: “After working with a green screen for‘ Alice in Wonderland ’, it was nice to return to work in real scenographies.Feeling the texture of the places was important, not only for me, but also for the actors. ”
Art director Rick Heinrich declares: “Tim always talks about feeling the movie and speaks in terms of emotional elements. It is as if he spoke of any of his characters. ”
In the heart of history are the vestiges of the Collins family empire: the Collinsport people and the ancestral house of Collinwood. Both sets constituted a challenge, not only for their scale, but because each one would have to suffer several metamorphosis throughout the film.
“First we see Collinsport as a Virgen de Maine coast, discovered by the Collins family. Then we see him transform into an animated town full of fishing activity, ”explains Heinrichs.“We see how the Collinwood mansion stands at the maximum point of family power, then in a state of abandonment, two centuries later, and later we see how life returns after remodeling. It was an especially difficult challenge because some days we were filming in 1972 and other days we filmed in 1750 ”.
For Collinsport, the first idea of production was to look for an existing fishing village, either in the United Kingdom or in Maine.Heinrichs comments: “We review photographs, we were looking for the United Kingdom, but it was clear that there was no coastal people to give us what we needed. There were many specific aesthetic aspects.I realized that we would have to build it. ”
Heinrichs and his team built the Collinsport by about 1972 from nothing, at the back of the Pinewood studies, taking advantage of the huge fenced tank and the green screen of the study."That allowed us to obtain exactly what we wanted in a very controlled situation," he says.
A key component in Collinsport design are the two opposite canned factories: Angel Bay, a collection of red and white wooden buildings from one side of the port and, crossing the water, the rickety buildings of the Collins Cannery factory, which we seeRestored in the course of the film.
Factory buildings were not empty facades, but had real machinery, obtained from true canned factories.Angel Bay offices were built in Pinewood, including Angie's person office, in which Bouchard women are exhibited through several generations ... They all share an extraordinary resemblance. The office was also the place of a particularly physical encounter between Barnabas and Angelique.
The actors worked with the Eunice Huthart action double coordinator for this sequence. They had to use harnesses with cables that allowed them to turn in the air.Eva Green confesses: "The cables are not to my liking, because I fear the heights, but I would do anything for Tim."
Far from water, there was a series of streets full of stores and buildings, including the Blue Whale Tavern, an appliance store, maritime equipment stores, clothing stores, a Shack lobster, a taxidermy business and even a cinema that exhibits, alternately, "Deliverance", "A Clockwork Orange" and "Super Fly".
"It was extraordinary," recalls Michelle Pfeiffer.“I could imagine staying there for a couple of days in a inn.In truth, it was one of the most impressive sets I've seen. ”
Graham King agrees: “The world that Rick and his team materialized was phenomenal, to the slightest detail.Walking the streets transported you to that place and that time.He felt completely real. ”
In a hill that rises above the town is the Collinwood mansion. To design the exterior of the mansion, Burton and Heinrichs were inspired by what appeared in the television series, a real Newport house, Rhode Island.Burton points out: "In general, our house is more majestic, but definitely evokes the original."
"We had to modify the mansion for our own ends," adds Heinrichs.“However, the followers of the program will notice some winks towards the architecture of the original, in particular the central tower. The house had to express all the elements: to be spooky, with some charm of the old world and dull glory. ”
A facade of a Collinwood floor was built in a pine forest in Bourne Woods, Surrey, with patio and fountain, in addition to an outer wall of 91 meters in length."We wanted the perspective class of the mansion that is obtained when filming outdoors," says Heinrichs.“It was a challenge, but it was worth it, because we could show a large part of the set.We extend the rest with visual effects. ”
In addition to the structure of a height floor, a complete collinwood mansion was built in “miniature”, at a third scale, ten meters high.
All interiors were built in Pinewood sound forums."We wanted him to feel like a magnificent house that had gone through bad times," Heinrich suggests.“To achieve this, we made very fine carved ones inside the house. The first time it enters varnish, he caresses sculptures, touches things and comments on his fine spell. To live up to his words, we strive to create for him a richly detailed environment. ”
Given Collinwood's closeness to the sea and the family's fishing tradition, Heinrichs designed the mansion, outside and inside, to reflect that maritime heritage.Fish, sirens and motifs of the ocean abound throughout the house and in its furniture, including sea horses on the chimney and statues of Neptune and his maritime family.
One of the most important interior sets was the great lobby, with a pattern of waves in the floor mosaics, a magnificent glass candlestick and half a dozen portraits of the Collins family throughout the centuries, including Barnabas and their parents.
"That place had to communicate many things about the family, giving us a richly detailed and dramatic sensation," heinrichs emphasizes.“The first time we see Elizabeth, she appears on the stairs, with the huge background window. It is a very theatrical entry and the entire back of the set was designed with that concept in mind. ”
One of Collinwood's rooms includes a secret vault that only Barnabas knows. He gets to her through a secret entrance hidden behind the fireplace in the room. When tightening a button, the cover moves and the fireplace goes back, the household stones sink to form the steps that lead to the secret passage.
Heinrich also designed several rooms of rooms, including a hexagonal for Carolyn, with a Felpuda carpet and purple walls, decorated with posters of artists such as Iggy Pop, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, T. Rex and Alice Cooper. The designer explains: “Each room had to communicate something about the characters that inhabited it.He wanted Carolyn's room to feel high because a teenager would want to be in such a place. He made sense to be on top of the tower, at the center of the entrance to the house. ”
Chloë Grace Moretz recounts: “I arrived one day and Tim asked: 'Do you want to see your room?'.I wanted to live there. ”
Visually, Burton wanted "dark shadows" to reflect the decade in which it develops. He showed the photography director Bruno delBonnel several classic vampire films of that time.Burton says: “We talk about its appearance, the sensation of the color palette.I really enjoyed working with Bruno. He always tried to leave from the character's point of view, not only from the point of view of the aspect. ”
To dress and stylize two centuries of fashions, Burton called the costume designer Colleen Atwood."I've worked with Colleen many times," says Burton.“I consider her a true artist, in the sense that she tries to get into the character, the same if she is doing something completely fantastic as if she is playing reality. We try to be faithful to the spirit of the wardrobe, without treating it as a joke, because fashion is very extreme.Again, this was very important because it is seen through Barnabas's eyes, and we wanted to feel the textures and capture the style of the time as intensely as possible. ”
Atwood comments: “I started with the investigation of the 18th century because it takes longer to get materials for that. Then I overcame the two periods to seek similarities, and incorporated things of both to get it to work. ”
"Colleen's approach to each character gave right on the target," says Depp.“As soon as you put the costumes, you start behaving differently. The characters reached another level by incorporating the costumes. ”
For the design of the Varnación de Barnabas, Atwood was determined to preserve the dazzling and gothic appearance of his 18th century wardrobe in his ’70 wardrobe."She wanted to keep the elegance of past times," she explains."The varnishing layer is a wink to the layer that the character used in the original series, but I changed it a little, giving it a stronger silhouette."
For the spirit of Josette, Atwood designed a dress that was a replica of a garment of the 18th century, made of printed nylon with an aluminum layer and adorned with slats that stirred in the wind. The dress also looked spectacular underwater. This was important because, to create a ghostly aspect, Burton filmed Heathcote in Pinewood's submerged tank. Then, the visual effects team eliminated the water.
Atwood confesses: “We made the dress long before knowing that it would be submerged.I knew that I played well with the light and looked fun in the wind, but we were lucky that it also worked underwater. ”
For the Angelique of the twentieth century, Atwood wanted to reflect the strength of the character and was inspired by a line of the script that described her as "taken from a commercial from Virginia Slims."Atwood points out: “I attached to that, designing for a modern woman although her soul is old.Her clothes were made to measure, functional in a world of men, but also with a strong form.Sexy, but custom adjusted. ”
For some cast members, the ’70s meant a return to the old days."I grew up in the 1970s, so the costumes produced me nostalgia," says Jackie Earle Haley."I would support the return of flared pants."
The production was nostalgic for several of the filmmakers and cast members, especially those who have pleasant memories of the film's roots.
David Kennedy declares: "They pay tribute to the series but, at the same time, they built something completely original."
"Everything was done with a lot of respect for the series and towards Dan Curtis," says Depp."I hope that even the most passionate followers appreciate it, because there are no more passionate followers than Michelle or Tim or me."
Burton reflects: “I wanted to stay with one foot in the new and another in the old, to invent something that was fun for both generations.Times have changed, but I think these characters are timeless. ”
