The price of tampons, sanitary napkins and menstrual cups is something that consumers can already verify through a microsite. This to ensure that companies eliminate the Value Added Tax (VAT) of these products.
Ricardo Sheffield Padilla, head of the Federal Consumer Attorney's Office (Profeco) announced the launch of a microsite where it will be possible to verify the price of menstrual hygiene products, whose 16% VAT should have disappeared as of 1 January of this year. With this tool, the government seeks to verify that the benefit of the elimination of this tax reaches the pocket of consumers.
Verify if the price of tampons does not include VAT
The head of Profeco mentioned that on the microsite consumers will be able to verify the market price of menstrual administration products, such as tampons, sanitary napkins and menstrual cups.
The microsite is regionalized so that consumers can review the price depending on the entity in which they live. At this time, it shows information from 38 cities in the country. The page also displays the prices of 41 types of sanitary napkins, seven presentations of tampons, and two of menstrual cups.
To consult the prices it is necessary to select a category: sanitary pads, tampons or menstrual cups. The platform will display the products for which information is available.
Then you must select the product you want to consult. The platform will display the information on the minimum, maximum and average price of the product, according to the data collected by the staff of the "Who is who in prices" program of Profeco, according to the information available on this website.
The microsite shows historical prices and allows you to consult them nationally or by city. Additionally, the data can be downloaded in .csv or .xml format.
Why are menstrual management products no longer subject to VAT?
In October 2021, the Senate approved the fiscal miscellaneous for 2022, which includes a 0% rate for management products menstrual supplies, such as sanitary napkins, tampons, and menstrual cups.
In addition, the Legislative Branch approved a reform to article 2 of the Value Added Tax Law (LIVA) so that the price of tampons, sanitary napkins and menstrual cups is zero percent.
This reform was promoted by the #MenstruaciónDigna collective, which also seeks free menstrual management products in public schools in the country and the generation of data on menstruation in Mexico.
However, there is still a long way to go before people can have a decent menstruation in Mexico, so let's remember that acquiring products to attend to menstruation such as sanitary napkins, tampons, menstrual cups, pain relievers or underwear is expensive and difficult for low-income women .
