The 45 most shocking abandoned places in the world
If you ever find yourself in the jungles of central Java, you might stumble across a ruined church that is equal parts impressive and confusing: Gereja Ayam, also known as the "Chicken Church."
The church (intended by the architect to be shaped like a dove: nice try!) opened in the 1990s, serving as a rehabilitation and worship center for all faiths. Unfortunately, the construction costs soon became too high and the project - and the building - were abandoned in 2000.
Today the pigeon has become something of a tourist destination, with murals adorning the interior, incredible views of the surrounding forests through the beak, and even a little cafe selling treats near the tail feathers. .
